artist statement
I investigate and observe spirituality in all its forms with a keen eye and am always deep in research about any phenomena connected to the mystical. Rapture 1 and 2 are digitally created images depicting Christian and Muslim women in the act of worship. As an artist spiritual gatherings hold a special interest for me. As people approach death, spirituality becomes a large part of the search for meaning in life. Some people find it in traditional religions, others in more animistic, pagan or unconventional spiritual communities. These images depict the awesome feelings one might experience in any of those communities.
about Monika
A main theme running throughout Morgenstern’s work is the visual representation of the numinous. She has had a long-standing interest in colour, perception, and phenomenology. Morgenstern uses her practice as a field in which to explore undefinable complex feelings that can be experienced and connect on a deeply emotional and psychological level.
